Summary

Keep Working。 Keep Playing。 Keep Creating。

In his previous books Steal Like an Artist and Show Your Work!, both New York Times bestsellers, Austin Kleon gave readers the keys to unlock their creativity and showed them how to become known。 Now he offers his most inspiring work yet, with ten simple rules for how to stay creative, focused, and true to yourself—for life。

The creative life is not a linear journey to a finish line, it’s a loop—so find a daily routine, because today is the only day that matters。 Disconnect from the world to connect with yourself—sometimes you just have to switch into airplane mode。 Keep Going celebrates getting outdoors and taking a walk (as director Ingmar Bergman told his daughter, ”The demons hate fresh air”)。 Pay attention, and especially pay attention to what you pay attention to。 Worry less about getting things done, and more about the worth of what you’re doing。 Instead of focusing on making your mark, work to leave things better than you found them。

Keep Going and its timeless, practical, and ethical principles are for anyone trying to sustain a meaningful and productive life。

This is my kind of book。 Short and to the point but so full of great information。 I read the e book from the library and made so many highlights, I want to purchase a copy as a resource。

Books have the answers to all our questions。 It is the best of times that I stumbled upon Austin Kleon’s words, I found the guide to choose my direction at the right time。 His words and writings have validated my thoughts and processes。 What else do I need to keep going? My favorite bits from this book:Pay attentionArt is making giftsSaying NoTo be done with the dayTo make hobbies as the sole bread-winning job is the easiest way to kill a passionAdios!

“To be on brand is to be 100% certain of who you are and what you do, and certainly, in art and in life, is not only completely overrated, it is also a roadblock to discovery。 Uncertainty is the very thing that art thrives on。” I did not know that Kleon released this and I was a fan of the first two books so I immediately got this one。 It follows the style of the previous two books where the author mixes art with writing。 I think it is very relatable, very easy to read and fun! I ended up reading the whole book in an hour in one sitting。Most of the things apply to artists and writers and I kind of like both but at the same time I think it could be applied to many more areas in life。 I think it is the kind of book that can be read when your battery feels depleted and you want to recharge! I don't want to say much because I think it is a short book and better be discovered by the reader! 。。。more

This is a nice, quick read for those of us who have been struggling during the pandemic to keep creating art。 My favorite line from the whole book? "If you want to change your life, change what you pay attention to。" I am going to keep that posted somewhere that I can see it on the regular, so I remember to make space for the important things。 This is a nice, quick read for those of us who have been struggling during the pandemic to keep creating art。 My favorite line from the whole book? Excelente libro。 Se sale de lo que usualmente suelo leer, pero me gustó muchísimo。

I liked the author's earlier book, "Steal Like an Artist" so wanted to check out his other creativity books。A lot of these ideas I heard before but the author presents them in an entertaining way。 I enjoyed the first half especially of this book。 I liked the author's earlier book, "Steal Like an Artist" so wanted to check out his other creativity books。A lot of these ideas I heard before but the author presents them in an entertaining way。 I enjoyed the first half especially of this book。 。。。more

More excellent thoughts and quotes from Austin Kleon, self-help without filler prose (though I use this category with hesitancy because it's not exactly what it is)。 Of course, it won't be helpful unless you develop practices around what's shared in the book。 Applies to life, to any and all vocations, because they all involve creativity。 More excellent thoughts and quotes from Austin Kleon, self-help without filler prose (though I use this category with hesitancy because it's not exactly what it is)。 Of course, it won't be helpful unless you develop practices around what's shared in the book。 Applies to life, to any and all vocations, because they all involve creativity。 。。。more

This book was recommended to me by my friend, Teresa Rust。 Thanks, Teresa! It was very encouraging, especially the last few pages (on my Kindle。) Austin gives lots of great suggestions for time management, getting ideas, exercise, etc。 Plus, he encourages us to slow down。。。enjoy our surroundings! Use our brains, our imaginations, think!!I enjoyed this book very much。 It was a quick read, so I am sure I will be reading it again and referring to my many highlights!

A fun and short book by one of my favorite pundits。 There is good advice here and I will be referring to it often。Good advice in this past lockdown year:"。。。when your days pretty much have the same shape, the days that don't have that shape become even more interesting。 There's nothing like a good prison break, and playing hooky isn't as fun if you never go to school。" A fun and short book by one of my favorite pundits。 There is good advice here and I will be referring to it often。Good advice in this past lockdown year:"。。。when your days pretty much have the same shape, the days that don't have that shape become even more interesting。 There's nothing like a good prison break, and playing hooky isn't as fun if you never go to school。" 。。。more

It’s a good reminder to take things slow and be a good human that create art。 Felt too much references at the end part。 I enjoyed the chapters in the beginning。

Still a good read but unlike Steal Like An Artist, this one is going on to one of my neighborhood's Little Free Libraries rather than my coffee table for future re-reads。I think some of this felt not as applicable to my particular creative pursuits (not a visual artist in my occupation or in any way I'd want to monetize) or things I already did (making lists, play, etc。) or things that felt more like your-mileage-may-vary (e。g。 when in doubt tidy up)。 Still a good read but unlike Steal Like An Artist, this one is going on to one of my neighborhood's Little Free Libraries rather than my coffee table for future re-reads。I think some of this felt not as applicable to my particular creative pursuits (not a visual artist in my occupation or in any way I'd want to monetize) or things I already did (making lists, play, etc。) or things that felt more like your-mileage-may-vary (e。g。 when in doubt tidy up)。 。。。more

I'm starting to realize that if you read one of these (Keep Going, Steal Like an Artist, Show Your Work) you're pretty much set。 A lot is repeated between the books。 Just something to be aware of。 I'm starting to realize that if you read one of these (Keep Going, Steal Like an Artist, Show Your Work) you're pretty much set。 A lot is repeated between the books。 Just something to be aware of。 。。。more

Again, not disappointed in another work by Kleon。 As with his other book Steal Like an Artist, Kleon shows a refreshing take on how to live life if you make art。 The writing is reflective, sincere, wholesome。 When I say wholesome, I mean it: Don’t make art that ‘makes a dent on the universe’。 Make art that leaves the world better than before。 Don’t strive to be a famous artist。 Strive to be a good person who makes art。 Don’t be the noun, do the verb。 Kleon offers helpful tips when you’re caught Again, not disappointed in another work by Kleon。 As with his other book Steal Like an Artist, Kleon shows a refreshing take on how to live life if you make art。 The writing is reflective, sincere, wholesome。 When I say wholesome, I mean it: Don’t make art that ‘makes a dent on the universe’。 Make art that leaves the world better than before。 Don’t strive to be a famous artist。 Strive to be a good person who makes art。 Don’t be the noun, do the verb。 Kleon offers helpful tips when you’re caught in a creative rut - take a walk, make a list, tidy up your studio (and explore stuff you missed while at it), avoid the news and your phone notifications, slow down and start drawing again to see the world in a new way, create a bliss studio or a space where you feel safe making art。All of Kleon’s books are great reminders of what’s important, and therefore should be read every now and then。 Reading his books are like having that wise friend give you a jolt of realness reminding you of the person you want to be。 。。。more

I love the idea of disconnecting from the world to connect with yourself。 It may not always be practical or possible, but it’s nice to shut out all the noise to just focus and get into the creative zone and enjoy the “play” time! A quick read。

While Kleon writes for artists, this is actually a book on living well with cool graphics to support his ideas and make the reader smile。
